Hi, I'm Joan, the mum who refused to stop travelling after having a kid

In fact, I travel more now. My son G (Baby G to anyone who follows me) took his first trip at 5 months old. Since then he has been on 30 trips, 13 of them in 2026 alone. He's 4 now, and he still comes with me everywhere.

People ask why I bother, since he won't remember it anyway. I won't lie, a big part of it is that I love travelling and I don't want to give that up, and I don't want to leave him behind either. Parenting is hard overseas, but it's just as hard in Singapore, so I might as well do it somewhere with sakura or nicer weather. I get to see my old favourite places through his eyes. Disneyland has a new excuse. I get to run through playgrounds and be amazed by simple things. And I want him to see the world, whether or not he remembers it next time.

What I don't love is the prep. The packing, the planning, the 1am hunt for something that's actually fun for a toddler or young kid and not just photogenic. It can feel like I need a holiday before the holiday has even started.

The travel journals started before a trip when G was 1. I made a simple book where we'd stick in photos (okay, I picked them, he was 1). Three years later he still flips through it and talks about that trip. For our Taiwan trip, when he was 2, I made a second version with activity pages and stickers to keep him busy on the plane and while waiting for food. He still tells me he wants to go back to the crayon factory in Yilan.

That's where Wanderlog comes from. It's a destination-specific travel journal with the planning done for you, so you can spend the trip with your kids.

Here's what you'll find on WanderKids:

  • Free guides: Hong Kong Disneyland tips for toddlers and young kids, and a list of kid-friendly restaurants in Shenzhen, with more coming soon
  • Tips: where to eat, play, rest and get around, from trips I've actually taken with G
  • Wanderlog: a destination-specific travel journal your child fills in during the trip

Tell me where you're taking your kids next, and I'll see what I can cover.

Joan
